Playdough Dyes Using Natural Ingredients

I have been wanting to try my hand at natural playdough dyes for a long time and I am so excited with how well these turned out.

I used these to accompany MLK day activities and explore the beautiful shades of skin. I’m excited to expand on these shades in the future but overall this was not a bad place to start

Note* for the turmeric a little goes a LONG way so even less than a teaspoon will give you a beautiful vibrant color. Too much will stain your hands so be careful!

For all of these I simply added the key ingredient to the water and heated them up, stirring constantly. Then I made the playdough as I normally would and added the colored water.

Coffee- 1 cup of coffee

Cinnamon- one tablespoon ground cinnamon mixed with 1 cup water over heat until combined

Turmeric- 1 teaspoon turmeric mixed with 1 cup water over heat until combined

Cocoa powder- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder mixed with one cup of water over heat until combined

Onion skin- skins of 1-2 onions in water over heat for about 10 minutes. Remove skins from water before mixing with other ingredients

Here’s the playdough recipe I use

1 cup water

1 cup flour

6 tablespoons salt

2 teaspoons cream of tartar

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Combine dry ingredients in a medium sauce pan on medium heat

Add in wet ingredients

Stir until it starts to become solid and does not stick to the pot

Set aside on wax paper until it cools

That’s it! You have great homemade playdough in gorgeous natural shades!

I store mine in air tight containers and they have lasted me months!
